ILLAPSE is the artist residency program of Lapse. The program offers a studio space in Barcelona where artists and other professionals within the field of contemporary art can develop their work. The ILLAPSE studio is located within the Lapse facilities, where the resident will share common areas with three other artists.
Residents are welcomed but not required to give a public presentation of their work, either during an open studio session or in the form of a talk. Lapse welcomes proposals that incorporate a wide range of media and contemporary artistic practices. We are particularly interested in innovative projects that prioritize interdisciplinary experimentation and the exchange of knowledge across fields and cultures. By fostering collaboration and dialogue, our aim is to enrich the creative process and generate unique perspectives — blending diverse methodologies and viewpoints to create impactful results.
Call for applications: Currently open for Winter & Spring 2025/26 and for Summer & Fall 2026 to national and international artists.
Duration: 1, 2, or 3 months of your choosing, as long as they belong to the same season. Options now are for winter (December, January, February) and spring (March, April, May) - and for summer (June, July, and August) or fall (September, October, November, and December).
Accommodations: We have a housing option to recommend in the center of Barcelona: a room in a three-bedroom flat with a private bathroom and shared kitchen. Housing expenses are not included in the residency fee. Let us know if you would like to know more.
Disciplines: ILLAPSE welcomes a range of artistic approaches, but we are not equipped for practices that require significant space, tools, or technical infrastructure. Performance, ceramics, large-scale or materially intensive work may not be feasible within the residency. We ask applicants to consider the space’s limitations when proposing a project.
Submission: Please read the Winter & Spring 26 open call guidelines or the Summer & Fall open call guidelines and then fill this form. You will be required to send us a single pdf of up to 5 pages that includes: A letter of intent stating your expectations and objectives at ILLAPSE, followed by a project proposal, a mini biography, an artist statement and samples of your previous work. Please put your name as the pdf title.

Lapse is a space for contemporary art and critical thought. As an artist association, we categorically reject any form of violence, militarism, hate-based ideologies, or affiliation with discriminatory groups or practices. We are committed to maintaining an environment where artists and collaborators operate free from coercion, exclusion, or intimidation. Lapse does not tolerate rhetoric or actions rooted in racism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, or any form of systemic oppression. These are not artistic positions — they are violations of the basic conditions for dialogue and integrity. Artists accepted into the residency are expected to uphold and comply with these principles throughout their participation.
